Does Fresh Fish Go Bad In The Fridge?

Proper storage is crucial if you want to extend the life of your fish. With some planning, your catch can be frozen to maintain consistency, taste and quality. How long fish is kept in the refrigerator and how long it lives depends on the type of fish, its condition and how well it is protected from the atmosphere.

You can preserve the freshness of your fish by storing it in the coldest part of your refrigerator for later use. If you do not plan to eat the fish for a few days, buy frozen fish. Defrost and store the fish in the refrigerator for no more than 2 days before consumption.

If your fish is not eaten within two days, you must wrap it in moisture-resistant freezing paper or foil to prevent it from air leaks before storing it in the freezer, says Harris-Uyidi. The best method is to store fresh fish in the refrigerator, which requires a refrigerated shelf that fits over a large, flat container such as a frying pan. If you store fish in this way for more than a day, replace the ice when it melts and pour in water.

Fish should be kept in the refrigerator for at least two days before being used or bought. To defrost frozen fish, you need to refrigerate it and allow 18 to 24 hours for a 1-pound package to defrost.

Fresh, raw fish meat should be white to light pink with a thin, clear film of liquid. Chilled fish should remain undercooked for days before it begins to spoil, and its flesh should look shiny and milky. Fish should be kept in a freezer or refrigerator full of ice to keep it fresh and durable.

Be sure to store cooked fish in an airtight container and make sure the container is vacuum sealed. Silivo food containers are another way to keep raw fish and meat fresh in the freezer for a long time. A spoiled cooled fish emits a strong pungent smell when thrown away.

If you want to freeze cooked fish, you can either store it in large freezer bags or put it in the freezer. Different types of fish keep in the refrigerator for varying lengths of time, but they all last about a day or two.
